Impala was Chevrolet's most expensive passenger model and had become the best-selling automobile in the United States in the 1960s. Sport Coupe models featured a "bubbleback" roof line style for 1961 (a thin rear roof pillar and an oversized "bubbled" rear window).
The Chevrolet Impala is a full-size automobile built by Chevrolet for model years 1958 to 1985, 1994 to 1996, and 2000 to present. Deriving its name from the African antelope of the same name, Impala was Chevrolet's most expensive passenger model and had become the best-selling automobile in the United States in the 1960s.
The Impala name was first used for the full-sized concept car in 1956 edition of General Motors Motorama Show. Painted emerald green metallic, with a white interior, the Impala featured hardtop styling.
The Impala was introduced for the 1958 model year as top of the line Bel Air hardtops and convertibles. From the windshield pillar rearward, the 1958 Bel Air Impala differed structurally from the lower-priced Chevrolet models. Hardtops had a slightly shorter greenhouse, but the wheelbase of the Impala was longer than the lower priced models, although the overall length was identical. Interiors held a two-spoke steering wheel and color-keyed door panels with brushed aluminum trim.
In 1961 the Chevrolet Impala would enter its third generation, and kick off what would likely become the most popular style of Impala, those built from 1961 to 1964. The Impala was restyled on the GM B platform for the first time. The new body styling was more trim and boxy than the 1958–1960 models, being offered with a three tail light cluster (instead, the other versions had only two tail light on each side). Sport Coupe models featured a "bubbleback" roof line style for 1961 (a thin rear roof pillar and an oversized rear window), and a unique model, the 2-door pillared sedan, was available for 1961 only. It was rarely ordered. A rare find, the "Super Sport" (SS) option also debuted in 1961.
This multiple award winning 1961 Impala Sport Coupe was restored in 2014. Under the hood is a 409 cubic inch (6.7 liter) V8 engine backed by an automatic 3-speed transmission. Chevrolet has built 491,000 Impalas in 1961.
This car has covered 87,966 miles (approx. 141.500 km).
