Full description

Chrysler's Town & Country (T&C) was an expression of status and the pinnacle of post war glamour. Produced as a Convertible exclusively from 1946 through 1950, it was produced in limited quantities due to its complexity and high exterior maintenance.

The year 1949 marked Chrysler’s 25th anniversary. The firm introduced its all-new post-war models in March of that year. Included was an equally new Town & Country model that now featured an all-steel structure. This was the first “T&C” that did not include the white ash framing as part of the structure of the car. Chrysler claimed greater safety, durability, and ease of maintenance. Gone was the four-door sedan. Two models were offered – the convertible and a new hardtop two-door coupe – though none of the latter were ever produced. Just under 1,000 convertible models were completed by year’s end.

Inside, Town and Country convertibles received a padded dash and instruments were clustered in front of the driver around the steering column. Controls were in easy reach and instruments were clearly legible. Later, this would be common among all automobiles. This was also the first vehicle to use a key tumbler that the driver would turn in order to start the car. Other standard features included a waterproof ignition system, electric clock, Prestomatic fluid drive transmission, and two-speed electric wipers. Power was supplied by a 135 hp L-head 323.5-cu. in. Spitfire straight eight.

This 1949 Chrysler New Yorker Town and Country Convertible is attractively presented in Ocean Blue with blue and white upholstery and a tan cloth top, it has chrome wire wheels, wide whitewall tires, clock, radio and a power-operated top. It has been restored to be a beautiful touring car with a nicely detailed engine compartment, good paint, chrome and interior. A fine summer drive, it combines Chrysler's quality engineering, proven drivetrain and the visual distinction of the wood-framed Town and Country body in one of Chrysler's more rare (in 1949 only 993 units were built) and memorable body styles.

The wooden parts of this Town & Country unit were completely restored at Tiriac Collection and the body was repainted. The car has covered 66,680 miles (approx. 107,300 km).
