Produced from 1947 through 1953, the Advanced-Design played a heavy role in Chevrolet’s success during the first decade after the war. Ratio of sale between cars and trucks dropped to 2.5:1. And Chevy hit 2 million sales (the first for any American car market) in 1950.
After WWII, Chevrolet came out the box with completely redesigned vehicles. Drivers wanted a more comfortable ride, equipped with better visibility and more width to the cargo box. The Advanced-Design Half-Ton Pickup delivered on all those requests.
In June 1947, Chevrolet trucks dealers began selling the new Advanced Design light duty pickups, the first genuinely new trucks to reach the market in the post war era. The most prominent new feature was the modernized cab, with its almost full width hood, passenger car styled front grille and integrated headlights. It provided room for three passengers, a well-designed dash and increased headroom, larger glass and doors and a softer ride. Cargo beds were also bigger, with lower opening gates for easy loading.
A new larger windshield and bigger side and rear window glass and optional rear-quarter windows vastly improved safety and driveability.

Sales zoomed as buyers flocked to the only truly new pickups available. With demand soaring, there was little need to make year-to-year changes, and the new 3100 series remained virtually unchanged throughout its seven year lifespan.
