The DeLorean automobile is a sports car that was manufactured by the DeLorean Motor Company for the American market in 1981 and 1982 in Northern Ireland. It is most commonly known simply as the DeLorean, as it was the only model ever produced by the company. The DeLorean DMC-12 featured memorably in the Back to the Future movie trilogy, as the model of car made into a homemade time machine by eccentric scientist Doc Brown.
The DeLorean automobile is a sports car manufactured by the DeLorean Motor Company for the American market in 1981 and 1982 in Northern Ireland. It is most commonly known simply as the DeLorean, as it was the only model ever produced by the company. The first prototype appeared in March 1976, and production officially began in 1981 at the DMC factory in Dunmurry, Northern Ireland. During its production, several features of the car were changed, such as the hood (bonnet) style, wheels and interior.
In October 1976, the first prototype DeLorean (then referred to as the DMC-12) was completed by William T. Collins, chief engineer for the DeLorean Motor Company (having formerly worked with John DeLorean at Pontiac and Chevrolet). Originally, the car’s rear-mounted power plant was to be a Citroën engine, as seen in the first prototype, though a Wankel rotary engine was also considered. For production, a French-designed and produced PRV (Peugeot-Renault-Volvo) fuel injected V6 was used. The engine is a version of the 2.8-litre V6 , 170hp, that was developed jointly by Peugeot, Renault and Volvo. It was also fitted in the Renault 30. The official 0-100 km/h time for the DMC-12 is 8.8 seconds.
The DMC-12 was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and featured gull-wing doors with a fiberglass ""underbody"", to which non-structural brushed stainless steel panels were affixed. The body panels weren’t painted, as they were made from the same brushed stainless steel used in the catering industry. The DMC-12 was so named because it was originally priced at $12,000. However, by the time it came to market, the car had a suggested retail price of $25,000 and you could option an automatic transmission for an extra $650.
The DMC-12 was the only model produced by the company, which would go into liquidation as the US car market went through its largest slump since the 1930s. About 8600 DMC-12s were produced between January 1981 and December 1982, only 16 official right-hand-drive cars, and about 6,500 DeLorean Motor cars were believed still to exist.
The DeLorean DMC-12 featured memorably in the Back to the Future movie trilogy, as the model of car made into a homemade time machine by eccentric scientist Doc Brown, although the company had ceased to exist before the first movie was made. A total of six DeLorean cars were used for the making of the Back to the Future movies, along with one built entirely out of fiberglass for scenes in which the car had to fly. Only three of the cars still exist.
This car has covered 437 kilometers.
