Full description

The first vehicles built by Louis Renault, from 1900 onwards, were fitted with a single cylinder De Dion Bouton engine. Then, in 1903, the range was extended to include a twin-cylinder engine developed by the manufacturer, available in different sizes. The Type AG appeared in 1905, the first model to be equipped with the 1,060 cc version of this twin-cylinder engine. It soon became well-known, adopted by the “Societe des Automobiles de Place” taxi company, and in 1914 these cars were used to carry troops to the front, becoming known as the “Taxi of the Marne”.

The Type AG evolved using a bigger engine and the subsequent Type AX inherited the 1,060 cc twin-cylinder engine. Renault AX was presented at the London Motor Show in 1908. This small car gained significant popular backing, considered to be the first economical Renault. Its simple engineering made mass-production easier, which in turn kept cost down. It was sold with a simple two-sitter convertible body and remained available until 1913.

As the architecture of the AX type car was identical to that of the AG type, the implementation lead to the filing of a patent on 4th May 1909. The objective was to reduce the time off-road to a minimum by enabling easy access to the vehicle’s main parts for maintenance or any necessary repairs.

Renowned French coachbuilder and collector Andre Lecoq wanted to include an early car, as a chronological starting point for his collection. He owned a long chassis Renault 9CV which was exchanged in 2011 for this little Renault AX. In recent years, it has been fitted with a phaeton body, wooden spoked wheels, and leather seats and bulkhead.

The car was completely restored by Tiriac Collection’s engineers.

This car has covered 19,167 km.
