Prices began at $3,346, making it the most expensive full-size Ford. It was also the heaviest. Over 180 m of wiring were used for its retractable top mechanism, spread among ten power relays, eight circuit breakers, ten limit switches, three drive motors, and four lock motors. Despite the complex construction, the system was very reliable. President Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered an early Skyliner car for himself.
Produced for just three years (1957-59), it was only the second car in history after the 1934 Peugeot 601 to be series produced with a retractable hardtop and sold a total of 12,915 units in 1959, its third and final year. The car was named the Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner in '57 and '58 only to be renamed the Ford Galaxie Skyliner for its final year. The Galaxie Sunliner Convertible, a conventional soft-top convertible, outsold it nearly four to one.

The conservative, squared-off design would be the first American car to win an award from fashion authority Comte’ Francais de l’elegance at the Brussels International exposition. Indeed, the 1959 cars are considered by many people to be the most beautifully-styled Fords ever built and President Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered an early Skyliner car for himself.
The car wears its original colors of Indian Turquoise over Colonial White and is powered by a 265 horsepower, 5436 cc V8 and mated to an automatic Ford-O-Matic transmission. It has power steering, power brakes, power windows, a dual exhaust, deluxe trim, and tinted glass. The car has been restored to show-quality standards. It has been displayed at several events including the Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance, the Glenmoor Gathering, and the International Ford Retractable Club Showcase.
This car has covered 382,9 miles (approx. 616 km).
